"Put a Bird on It!" - mixed media on aquabord, 4" x 4"
Is it finally Friday? What a week! After numerous calamities, frustrations, hiccups and switchbacks, I was desperate for a way to salvage it. And the solution was right there! (Right WHERE? You may ask...) In one of the most magical places in the USA - Portland, Oregon. Well, not exactly the city of Portland. But the imaginary place of PORTLANDIA. For those of you who appreciate this bizarre type of television humor, you may recall an episode in a retail shop, where the shop owners made EVERYTHING better by putting a bird on it. It is one of my all-time favorite episodes, and is my strategy for this crazy week. I am putting a bird on everything, and it all seems better. Seriously...take our air conditioning fiasco. Put a bird on the head of the technician who "accidentally" destroyed some wood molding. Better! Put a bird on the air conditioner which was leaking fluids and threatening mutiny. Better! Put a bird on the invoice for thousands of dollars. Better! Now let's try it with my dad's car, which decided to die in his garage. Put a bird on top of the Lexus. Better! Put a bird on top of the AAA tow-truck. Better! Put a bird on top of the dead battery. Better! Put a bird on the top of my dad's cane as he stood frustrated in the garage. Better! I highly suggest you try this at home. Imagine a bird on top of anything you're frustrated with. Flamingos, ostriches, ducks, pelicans, secretary birds... you can't help but smile, right? As I sat down in my studio to begin today's painting, I laughed out loud...I knew exactly what to do! That's right, I put a bird on my head. And the entire week seemed somehow whimsical and oddly funny. Better! This piece is available, unframed.
