30 Paintings in 30 Days - Day 2

"The Little One Rises" - mixed media on aquabord, 6" x 6".  Available on Artfinder.

Day two of the 30 in 30 challenge!  When we left off yesterday, we were headed into the woods.  Adventure!  Excitement!  And...fear.

Who knows what may be lurking on the journey?

FEAR.  A big ol' four-letter-word that stops us in our tracks.  It's only the second day of the new year, but by now many of us are already thinking "what if?" thoughts...what if I can't complete this 30 day challenge?  What if I can't keep my resolutions?  What if 2017 is like 2016?  What if my goals are too big, my dreams are too vast and my skills are too limited?
And before we've stepped foot into the woods, we've put a monkey on our backs with our own thoughts.  Well, at least that's how my brain often works.

One of the gifts I received this Christmas is a book by the choreographer Twyla Tharp called The Creative Habit.  I'm a few chapters in, and truly impressed by her creative discipline, which begins with understanding her own thoughts about everything.  Including fear.

Our ability to grow is directly proportional to our ability to entertain the uncomfortable.

Are you uncomfortable reading that sentence?  I was for a second.  But if I think about all discomfort using the exercise metaphor (using muscles causes discomfort which then causes stronger better bigger muscles) then I begin to see the uncomfortable as a launch pad for something great!  Just changing the thought around the thing makes it less of one thing (fear) and more of another (challenge), and then I no longer hesitate.

Today's piece is an abstract inspired by the little things growing in the forest...lichens, mosses, algae. And like our budding ability to embrace the uncomfortable, they play a mighty role in the world.

Today's "Pay What You Can" piece is "Supergirl" - this is a 6 x 6 mixed media piece on aquabord.  Shipping is anticipated to be $5.50.  She is perfect to remind you of your super powers on days when you might need a little lift. :)  Aquabord may be easily dropped into a float frame, or leaned on a shelf.

Email me at imajenation@gmail.com with the amount you'd like to pay for this little cutie (and remember shipping will be in addition), and a winner will be randomly selected in 24 hours and notified by email.

Jen, your art posted at 30in30 is what first drew me to your blog, and now at your blog your writing and your thinking have me eager to see tomorrow's post.

Question for you: how does aquabord compare with gessobord, do you know?

Dotty! What a wonderful compliment! Thank you!!!!

As for aquabord, it is porous and can be used with watercolor and acrylic, whereas gessobord repels the liquid and would not be good with watercolor. Does that help?

Thanks for the info re aquabord. Very helpful. I've used gessobord in the past and have enjoyed using it, but there have been times when its tendency to repel liquid isn't to my liking. SO, I may just have to try aquabord!
