30 Paintings in 30 Days - Day Four

Day four!  More non-brush painting, this one with palette knife, credit card, sponge and fingers.  It was more challenging than I expected, but I think the struggle was due to my original color choices, which were not pleasing to me.  After scraping them off and adding the first layer of the new colors, I felt such relief!  Why does it surprise me when colors effect me so profoundly?

Color is an interesting animal.  It can be vibrant and beautiful, soft and subtle, garish and unsettling.  Combinations of colors can alternately sooth or provoke, invigorate or numb.  And color is intensely personal.  Not just people's color preferences, but how it looks on each individual.  For example, I can rock a bright pink or vivid blue.  But put anything orange or yellow near my face and I look like the walking dead.  And color changes the way I feel when I wear it.  A bright, confident color makes me feel more outgoing.  Something rather plain or subtle and I am quieter.  I often choose the colors I wear depending on where I am going and what I want to project.  Confidence? Calm? High energy fun?  There is a color for that!

In my home, I try to surround myself with colors which both inspire and calm. The majority of my house is white - pure, stark white.  White walls, white ceilings, white floors.  Like a blank canvas.  By changing the art, the accessories and a couple of throw pillows, I can change the mood of the room like magic!  And I often do (much to my husband's dismay!) change things around.  It brings  new energy and life to the room and the people in it.

So the next time you're feeling a bit stale in your space (or in your clothes), intentionally infuse a color you love and watch how much better you feel.  Or remove a color that drives you nuts (like the original colors in this piece of art) and breathe a sigh of relief!

Here's the blue wild, where
tiny dreamers ride beasts, speak
 birdsong, hold the moon.
