"Coming Home to Roost" - mixed media on canvas, 18" x 24"

Can it be the end of week one already?  I am having such fun with this!

Today's painting is a large one. Until now, each piece has been pretty small, but quite doable during a 24 hour period.  This one was more of a stretch.  More layers, more scraping, more painted covered fingers and hands.

So we recently acquired a new boarder.  In addition to my awesome dad, his boxer, Alice, has joined our ranks.  She's been gypsy dog for a few weeks while we settled my dad in here, staying with her dog walker until we could go pick her up.  This weekend she came home to roost at her new forever home.

Initially, she was quite uncertain about the whole move.  She seemed sad and wistful during the long car ride, gazing longingly out of the car window at the passing landscape.  Occasionally she would look at the car's occupants, and then return her chin to the door ledge to rest while she looked outside.

Upon arrival, she perked up a bit, but still seemed restless and unsure.  Pacing the house, sniffing every nook and cranny and then pacing again, she could not relax.  So we leashed her up and gave her the tour of the neighborhood, letting her absorb the sights and smells to her heart's content (which took quite a while!) and then brought her back inside to see what would happen.

A few slobbery bowls of water later, she is sprawled on the cool kitchen tile, legs splayed and eyes bright.  It could be she is smiling just a little bit.  And so are we.  Welcome home, Alice.  Welcome home.
