All About You

"You Are Loved", "You Are Beauty", "You are Good", "Be Nice to You" - acrylic on panel, each 8" x 8" x .25".  Ready to hang.  Available here and at Artfinder.

Today's post is all about YOU!

You are LOVED!
You are BEAUTY!
You are GOOD!
and therefore, be nice to YOU!

Our inner dialogue can be like a pack of demon hounds from hell.  The inner critic, inner naysayer, inner voice that tells us we aren't good enough.  Sometimes I think it is a lifelong battle to shush that voice and listen to what is good and wonderful about ourselves.

And I'm pretty sure I am not alone on this one.

So this week the studio is aflutter with little replacements for that inner trouble-maker. Imagine a herd of beastly picketers lined up on your sidewalk holding signs of support for you in the world.  Reminders to fill your sweet self with encouragement.

I've also started work on a new abstract experiment - trying to replicate the feel of last week's salvaged plywood but on a new board.  Beginning with the application of dimensional grounds and thick white gesso, followed by gold and black gesso and then paint beaten to smithereens (a highly advanced art technique, I assure you) with scrapers, chopsticks and palette knives. I'll be using a limited color palette again, but more vibrant.  My wise intern says I should give you a peek at the painting in progress, even if that makes me a bit uncomfortable.

Here's the progression so far - it will be fun to see how this piece ends up.  In the meantime, off you go, waving your flag of marvelousness. :)

Reclaimed Horizon
"Reclaimed Horizon" - mixed media on salvaged plywood,  19" x 29" x .5".  Ready to hang.  Available here.

"There are no perfect days. We have struggled hard against this truth. "
From Today's Gift

This little zinger landed in my in-box last week.  And it smacked me in the forehead - she who struggles with her own perfectionism. idealism and romanticism.  What do you mean there are no perfect days?

Most of my life I have dreamed of the day when  ___________(fill in the blank).  As if someday that perfect, idealized day would come.  The three "isms" get in the way of every day, and turn the actual horizon into an event horizon (black hole speak, which can mean a horizon which appears to keep moving away as you move closer to it).

The "isms" are also tough on your relationships (what? you mean no one is perfect???) your creative process (never satisfied, not enjoying what you've accomplished) and your decision making capability (nothing is quite good enough).
So what happens when we discard the idea of perfection?

This piece is (ahem) a perfect example.  It began is imperfect as a piece can be - the very board itself is a piece of salvaged lumber, discarded at a metal shop. It was already painted (light teal exterior paint), scraped, grooved and rough.  By starting with something discarded and hugely distressed, each layer I added to it just made it better.  None of the angst of beginning with a pure, white canvas and judging each subsequent mark and brushstroke.

There was NO WAY this painting could ever be pristine and perfect.  I embraced its rough imperfection by adding even more texture (dimensional grounds) and using a spackle knife to carve back into the layers of paint.  And it got better and better.  It is now the best that it can be.  Which isn't perfect at all.  But it makes me smile every time I walk past and get a glimpse of it on the easel.  Now, if I can just look at each day this way - rough and discarded, ready to be improved and made better, not made perfect.   Hmmmmm.

Aching To Find Her Voice

Aching to Find Her Voice
"Aching to Find Her Voice" - mixed media on cradled wood panel, 12" x 12" x 1".  Ready to hang.  Available here and at Artfinder.

Oh, the path of paintings!  So twisted and filled with surprises.  This piece began as a sweet and cheery sketch of a bonneted girl in a patch of flowers.

As the layers thickened and the personality emerged, she became a burdened queen, worried and heavy-headed, sleep-deprived and soulful.  She whispers "it's ok, it's ok.  Ok to feel, ok to empathize, ok to be sad for a time."  She shines light on the need to honor feelings, whatever they might be, but also to know we are powerful, holding the tools to blaze a path to happiness in our own two hands.  And one of those tools is our voice.

You have always been good,
like a fiddlehead fern, like a Rough-legged Hawk riding
a thermal.  Look up.  Let the sun ride your cheekbones, slide
along your jaw, and fill your mouth.

You are good.  Hear me.
Take this in like water dropped to a nomad, like a breath
to a cigarette quitter, like rain.
You are good.

from the poem MANIFESTO FOR THE GIRL
For Every Girl - New and Selected Poems by Kate Gray

I so love the voice of this poet.

Do you pick up on a theme threading through your days on occasion?  This week, conversations across many days were zinging with the theme of believing in your own goodness.  And then the universe plunked this little book by local poet Kate Gray into my lap, thanks to the reader-of-my-mind at Two Rivers Books, owner Christine.  I scanned the table of contents and dove right into this poem...and smiled.  Thanks, universe. :)

Wherever you are in this day, you are good.  You have always been good.

Cotton Candy Bears on a Winter's Eve
"Cotton Candy Bears on a Winter's Eve" - acrylic on cradled wood panel, 8" x 10" x 1".  Ready to hang.  Available here and at Artfinder.

Whimsy wonderland continues in the studio!  This week couple of bears - one of whom seems to be getting around the easy way. Which is what I wish I could do this week.  Low energy slugfest here.  It would be lovely to hitch a ride on a big snuggly bear and run errands like a lazy lima bean.

As we emerge from winter here in the PNW, assaulted by a frenzy of blooming color on every street, I imagine the forest bears emerging in a snuggly mass of cotton candy colored fur.  After all, it is Portland. :)

Whatever did I do before there was an intern?

This week we present a video on how a painting begins (last time we showed you the ending).  And if you turn up the sound, you will be able to enjoy my tiny anthem as part of the show.

A pencil sketch on wood panel...then painting out the background, adding those lovely florescent colors to the underpainting.  Then a bit of this and a spot of that, until personalities begin to emerge.  Sweetness!

"Embrace the Tiger" - mixed media on cradled wood panel, 11" x 14" x 1".  Available at The Salty Teacup.

Whimsical wonderland continues this week with a surly cat doing his best to remain calm while feathered friends explore his luxurious fur.    This piece was created just for The Salty Teacup in St Johns, where a heap of malarkey unfolds this Friday from 5 - 8 pm.  This is my first showing in Portland, and I couldn't be more delighted by the venue!  A shop filled with shenanigans and quirky wonder, and some of the wittiest swashbuckling shopkeepers the world has ever known. :)

Finding your tribe in a new land is both adventure-filled and stressful.  So many unknowns!  And for introverted creative types, it requires a caffeine-fortified pirate-accented tutu-wearing approach:
  • don't even THINK about exploring your new habitat until you are fully awake and feeling fueled
  • know your story!  If it feels better telling your story in an "ARGHHHH" filled accent, go for it!
  • wear something that feels good - a tutu is eye-catching, but your favorite boots will do as well.
  • be prepared for the universe to open wide and cover you in a refreshing deluge of inspiration, new friends, opportunities and sprightly connections.  Seriously!
  • if you have a magic wand, keep it in your car (or your bag). You never know when you might need it.
It has been just over four months since we planted ourselves in Portland, and already I've met a healer, a shaman, a moon-whisperer, a rug wizard, a book maven, a rebel, a tree advocate, two yodeling hound dogs, burlesque clowns, drag queens, a modern-day caveman, a 90 year-old plant nurturer and a rabbit named Bellatrix Lestrange (to name a few).

If you're in the neighborhood Friday evening, pop in to The Salty Teacup for a little malarkey-filled adventure of your own.  You just never know who you might meet along the way. :)

SUSPENSION

Suspension
"Suspension" - mixed media on cradled wood panel, 12" x 6.5" x 1.75" .  Ready to hang.  Available here and at Artfinder.

Taking a wee break from the chattering malarkey gang to contemplate the architectural beauty of the St John.s Bridge.  It's a local landmark - a steel suspension bridge over the Willamette River in the St Johns neighborhood of Portland.  There is a lovely park below the bridge near the riverbanks, and quaint town center nearby.

I'm not an architectural artist by nature, so it was interesting to see how my muse would approach a structure.  First up, she wanted to tilt the image, just as I do with many of my photographs.  Oh yes!  Then an underpainting in fluorescent pinks and blues...oh my!  Blend liberally with gesso, water-based inks and a little quinacridone nickel ago gold.  Oh wow!

Earlier this year, I took an online painting class with Pauline Agnew, where I learned about the Notan app and the Notanizer.  Until this week, I used it to create a value map from a photo to inform the values in a painting.  This week, I used it in reverse to check my completed painting for values and drama.

Imagine my surprise when the St. Johns bridge became a gothic, moody, haunted looking structure in the Notan app!  I adore the contrast between the colorful painting and the moody Notan image.  Yin and Yang.  Day and night.  Soft and scary.  I am a bit dazzled!

And then there were chickens.  Not just any chickens, but chickens in jumpers.

Whimsy wonderland continues in the studio, with creatures in various stages on boards strewn about.  The chattering and malarkey is building to a crescendo in there!  Sometimes I close the door and tiptoe away for a little peace and quiet. :)

What is it about chickens that we find so entertaining?  Feathery, clucky, egg-laying birds with bobbing head motions and odd feet.  Chickens have a reputation for being empty headed and fearful in modern culture, but their reputation is quite different around the world.
There are cultures which consider the chicken to represent enlightenment.  The wild chicken is considered to be devoted  and brave.  There is a tender, social, earthy presence to chickens, which choose to be near the ground despite their ability to fly to higher places.

If the chicken is your spirit animal, you're being asked to stay present and avoid worrying about the future.  The chicken suggests you enjoy the gentle touch of loved ones, the sun on your face and the contentment of home.  Add a sprinkle of play, and remember to use your voice - speak your truth and vocalize your emotions.

For you creatives out there, chicken energy helps you become patient and calm in your process, attending to the tiniest of details (chickens are reputed to have excellent near vision).  There are some breeds of chicken which sing a little song with the arrival of each egg - you might want to develop your own vocalized celebration with each finished project.  BaGAWK!  Or maybe a little dance...come on now, you know you want to!

Gladys and the Pips

"Gladys and the Pips" - mixed media on cradled wood panel, 16" x 20" x 1.5".  Ready to hang.  Available here and at Artfinder.

It is whimsical week in the studio, where anything can happen!  An antlered rabbit named Gladys appeared on the board.  She takes her singing career seriously.

In this piece, water-based inks were mixed with acrylic white gesso to generate vibrant colors that go on smoothly with a matte finish.  And quite a few coconut caramels were consumed (Gladys' favorite treat, I discovered).

This particular painting is a really big deal...it is number one thousand.  That's right, 1,000 pieces of art created by these two hands since 2009. It also marks a decade of painting and doodling and dabbling and making malarkey in the world.  Whoa.  This calls for cake!
