Holy Ground and Jagged Edges (another double scoop)

Holy Ground
"Holy Ground" and "Jagged Edges", mixed media on wood panel (plywood, uncradled) each 10" x 8".  Available here and at Artfinder.

And it is often in the jagged edges of experience we refuse to pick up that the mystical strength of all human experience waits.  In truth, any sliver of glass or broken dream will do to puncture our illusions.  There, we will stumble on holy ground.  -MARK NEPO, The Exquisite Risk

There have been some jagged edges in the last few weeks.  And it is so tempting not to pick them up.  Wouldn't we rather sink into pajama days filled with coconut ice cream and Netflix?  Maybe.  But later on we will be glad (so glad) if instead we slayed the dragon of illusion and found the real deal waiting on the other end of a broken dream.
Now that's a lot of heavy lifting for a Thursday during a normal week, let alone one riddled with masks and hand sanitizer and protest signs.  Which calls to mind something my dad used to say to me whenever life heaped manure on top of the sweet smelling rose bushes - find the joy in every day.

The gist of that was this: there is joy in everything, even the stinky stuff.  And it is important, maybe even vital, to grab that joy and stuff it in your pocket without guilt or hesitation.   It is absolutely ok to smile and feel good for a moment in the midst of the other stuff.

So let me ask, dear reader, what will you put in your joy pocket today?  My pocket is crammed with a 7 lb chihuahua  and a handful of air-fried cremini mushrooms (yum).  Leave a comment below and said chihuahua will select a winner at random to receive a tiny piece of original art.  Because YOU, dear reader, make every day sparkly for me. :)

Jagged Edges

About the art:  continued small studies in color palettes from the e-course last month.  Acrylic heaped on collage with scraper and brush and rubber wedge and fingers.   This week I am painting with Princeton Catalyst Polytip brushes, which are oooooooooh la la for a girl who likes stiff but responsive, nearly indestructible brushes.  These pieces were finished with a touch of oil pastel and a sprinkling of fairy dust.

My joy toady is in anticipation. Waiting (hopefully) for good news about an art residency off the grid on an island where the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico meet in September. I'm dreaming of a 40 acre island with an old lighthouse and afternoon storms be watched and felt and smelled from the safety of the front porch of a tiny lighthouse keepers house.

Carl! I want a "joy toady" - ha ha! But seriously, what an AMAZING adventure awaits you! Your joy pocket will be filled to overflowing for a LONG time after that residency. :)

Already in my joy pocket(s) today:
• a 500a walk in mild temps
• coffee date by a tidal river
• budlea bush in front yard in bloom
• whole loaded-to-the-gills grocery bag of personal papers burned
• garlic scapes from our garden chopped into my homemade lunch soup
• kale growing robustly in a planter on the back deck
• footprints on holy ground
• a path to follow through jagged edges
• plenty of jagged edges to pick up

Dotty - 5 am? No wonder your pockets are so full! Lots of time to collect and accomplish...and to leave footprints on holy ground. :)

Wish you luck Carl!
Dotty, so much joy in your day!
For me, my afternoon siesta with a row of white chocolate and a bunch of jelly beans in my pocket! Nothing like the joy of sugar!

Carol, you make me smile! A pocket full of candy and chocolate would bring me joy, too!

As of late I too have been struggling finding and holding onto joy. So I made a decision on Monday to change my heart (in hopes my mind will follow). I am determined not to be a negative nelly and really start looking for things to be grateful for. Each day I write down five things to be grateful for and what positive emotion it brings forth.
As you know my dog is dying so rather than focus on his cancer I am really trying to be present in our daily play time. Really enjoy his quirky, funny, OCD personality.
Happiness is a daily decision. So I am goin stuff as much joy into my pockets as possible everyday! So when the rains come, as the always do, I will have joy surplus’ to keep me going!!!! #soulsister

Trina...my heart is heavy for your sweet pooch. At the same time, huge admiration for you and your determination and daily gratitude. I can just imagine the joy your dog is feeling with your focused presence!

The sight and scent of mimosa trees on the edge of a parking lot;
Adding my "flags" of intercessions and thanksgivings to the Circle of Prayer that hangs from trees in a cul-de-sac in a neighborhood near the doctor's office where John had an appointment this morning;
Our weekly visit to a specialty grocery to buy our once-a-week steak and a good bottle of wine for Friday night dinner (our tradition for at least 50 years);
I haven't broken down in tears about something stupid even once today;
and my sister made me laugh so much when we talked last night!

Mary! What joy-filled pockets you have! I love the prayer tree idea...we have a wishing tree in our neighborhood. It makes me smile. As does the thought of your 50 year tradition! I am a kindred spirit with daily tears - glad you have a sister who makes you laugh. :)
