Does your brain mess up song lyrics?

I have a long history of this.  Singing along in the car with my husband, belting out what I think are the words.  Then the turn of his head and half smile on his face as he says "what exactly do you think the words are?" and I find out I was waaaaaay off.

She's a brick house.
She's my tomato, just letting it all hang out.

Isn't that the way everyone sings it?  Apparently not. :)  It happened again in the studio yesterday, as the song "Summer Breeze" was drifting through my thoughts while I painted.

Summer breeze
makes me feel fine
blowing through the chasm in my mind

Hmmmm.  I knew "chasm" was the wrong word, but it felt like my brain was stuck on it.  Which made me think of how very foggy my thoughts have been recently as I wade out of a landslide of grief.  And foggy thinking brought me to the word "cobwebs" which then appeared in the background of this painting as I buffed away layers of really awkward paint.  The cobwebs were just right in the painting, so I figured they could jump into the song as well.

Summer breeze
makes me feel fine
blowing through the cobwebs in my mind

As I write this, dear reader, I realize you've just had a firsthand look at the family circus comic orientation of my brain, it's circuitous paths and nonsensical connections.  But I figure if you're still reading, maybe you can relate.   You are not alone!  Let's celebrate the ever fascinating, quirky human brain.  And maybe sing lyrics a little more quietly, just in case we're not exactly getting them right.

I do this all the time. And I too thought it was chasm not jasmine.

Susan! That's so funny! I am relieved that I'm not the only one using "chasm" in this song...and delighted that there are others in this tribe of the lyrically challenged!

Mondegreens! Love 'em!

This from Wikipedia:
A mondegreen /ˈmɒndᵻɡriːn/ is a mishearing or misinterpretation of a phrase as a result of near-homophony, in a way that gives it a new meaning. Mondegreens are most often created by a person listening to a poem or a song; the listener, being unable to clearly hear a lyric, substitutes words that sound similar and make some kind of sense. American writer Sylvia Wright coined the term in 1954, writing about how as a girl she had misheard the lyric "...and laid him on the green" in a Scottish ballad as "...and Lady Mondegreen".

My mom thought "(Ti!) Tea, a drink with jam and bread" in Do Re Mi was "Tea, a drink with Jim and Fred." Also, in the ditty about Perfect Posture, instead of hearing "You must grow up handsome," she heard, "You must grow a pansome."

The best.

As are Sasha and her cobwebs (the filigree! the mystery! the dimensionality!).

And her dress. Oh, her dress.

Sasha, don't let Jen shush you one little bit. You go ahead and sing as LOUDLY as you wish!

Holy word play, Dotty! You taught me something fabulous and new! And now I want to drink with Jim and Fred....that totally cracked me up. :)

Someday, you and I are going to make people dresses to wear like these girls do. And we will be the envy of ALL! ha ha!

Thank you, sweet Dotty. You made me chuckle and smile all at once!

I adore the cobwebs.... so many interesting creature like thingy going on. Dotty is a goldmine of information. Not familiar with these lyrics so you could sell me anything! Sasha doesn't seem to mind as long as they don't get into her hair. Oh great a fashion show on the way.

Thank you, Carol! The cobwebs were a happy accident as I was scrubbing away. It seems the very best things happen when I least expect them. :) So the correct lyrics are: "She's a brick house. She's mighty mighty, just letting it all hang out." And the second song: "Summer breeze, makes me feel fine. Blowing through the jasmine in my mind."

Thanks to Dotty, I am now well-informed on this phenomenon! And delighted to know a new word. And you are right - Sasha is content as long as she is cobweb-free!

Sometimes, it happens to me too. I guess, we all messed up singing a wrong song lyrics because of so many reasons. Perhaps, it is because we have a lot in our mind going while singing, or we simply don't know the right lyrics and we just want to sing the way we want to sing. We don't need to be sorry for that especially if we didn't plan to mess up with the lyrics. It happens and there is no need for us to feel bad about it! O the other hand, I want to thank you for being open to us. You have shared a lot already, and I couldn't help but to be impressed!
