...the measure of an unwasted life is not what outlives it but how it was lived — how much integrity and authenticity and creative vitality filled these numbered days, these unrepeatable hours. -THE MARGINALIAN

I've been thinking about the third act in a life.

My life, to be exact.
There are people (mostly very wealthy people) who are trying to add multiple acts to a lifespan.  And there are people who are more focused on the legacy they will leave behind, be it statues or street names or towers or ballrooms.

And we are a society focused on productivity: how much can you do, how much MORE can you do, how fast can you do it. Which leaves very little time or energy for just, well, living.

Admittedly, these are things I have the luxury of time, resources and near-retirement to contemplate. But wouldn't it be worthwhile if we directed the ship of our lives toward integrity, authenticity and creative vitality from the get-go? I try to imagine how my life would have unfolded if I had not been taught to do more, do better, do faster and instead had been taught to slow down, be curious, be true to myself.

I don't have all the answers - no, no, NO! But I have questions. How about you?

These Unrepeatable Hours

About the art: I recently had the opportunity to demonstrate oil painting to an up-and-coming young artist who was moving from acrylics to oils. Over the course of several hours, we built layers of oil paint on abstracted landscapes while pondering the trajectory of our creative lives. These pieces were started during that paint session, and completed over the weeks following.  Intuitive landscapes built rapidly and then refined, with a focus on lean-to-fat paint building, color and texture. They are small but impactful, and the process reminded me of the value of just diving in and letting the paint lead where it wants to.

The annual sale is nearly here!

Gesso murders will be rampant! Paintings will be obliterated! And the lucky ones will go home to savvy collectors who know this happens once a year and grab their favorites.

Is this to make money? Nope! Not at these prices.
Is it to make room? Not at all, as I have BIG storage here.
What's it for?
Good question!

Firstly, it puts original art in the hands of those for whom it might generally be just out of reach - that's mega important!

Secondly, it keeps this artist from becoming too precious about the work. A focus on what works, rather than what does not work.

Thirdly, who doesn't want to dump gesso or paint over a piece of art? An act of protest! Of deconstruction!
 Of demolition! YES!

Lots of yeses here, Lola! Nodding my head up and down repeatedly as I take in These Numbered Days and These Unrepeatable Hours, and read from top to bottom. I've been wrestling with similar questions. Living with questions. More questions than answers but answers are not necessarily my goal. I want to foster wholeheartedly slowing down, being curious, being true to myself.

These paintings! Just diving in and letting the paint lead where it wants to. YES. They shine exquisitely from that magical place between realism and abstraction!

Dotty!!! YES! More questions than answers...I love your fostering of wholehearted slowing down, curiosity, trueness...yes, yes YES! I find myself wanting to drag my feet through the days. SLOW DOWN, NELLIE! Put the brakes on! Life is speeding too fast!

And thank you for your feedback on the art. It means so much. My goal with these is always to perch on the edge between realism and abstraction, so huzzah!!! xo

Woo Doggy... Lola you hit on a topic that keeps me up at night. What if..
What if I had not inherited my dad's work ethic?...
What if I had been not so quick to trade my youth through sweat equity to rise to a middle management position I dreaded?...
What if I had courage in school to try and fail and try again in my art courses instead of dropping them before critiques.

While I always tried to keep my hand in art I spent from 20-50 wearing a mask and watching the grains of sand slip through the hour glass. Until I walked away (jumped) from a position of safety to open an art studio and gallery. To be the me I was always meant to be. I'm fortunate this revelatory plunge didn't break my marriage (because my wife, my partner, my best friend realized I needed to spread my wings to be happy) at around 50 I was finally pursuing my art full time. Now due to my late start I am still working hard, but it's for what I want and to become the artist I always knew I could be. Life at 59 is about my work, I have discovered a passion for teaching art! and family and seeing new places when I can. If I had started painting right from the start would I be in the same place? Who knows, but I have decades left to chase the dream and become as good as I imagine I can be. I Hope I have decades! it's not about accolades or sales at this point it's personal. It keeps me getting out of bed each day and trying to be better than the day before.

Thanks for the 'What if' lightning bolt to kick off my week wanting to make that next painting.

Oh and I forgot the artwork! Your bend of abstracted representational paintings like these just knock my socks off!

Wow, I am totally blown away by this great post Lola, and by Carl's poignant response. Yes to you both!
Social media has amped up the illusion that what is seen online as an accomplishment or trophy...is what matters.
It just isn't true.

Thea!!! Thank you, dear human! Carl's response blew me away. And your reminder is spot on - the "amped up illusion" has created a false pressure, a non-existant destination. It is hard to separate the wheat from the chaff online, but I am determined! xoxo

Carl!!! Isn't is exquisite how a supportive partner can help us LEAP into a life of being true to ourselves? You and I share a similar path and a common "late start". But at least we have begun!

You are helping others choose this path as well with your teaching and your determined pursuit of the art. YOU SHINE!!!!

And thanks so much for your feeback on the art. It means the world!
