103 Pieces. 25 Pairs. 65 Pounds.
When I am here, I do not suffer the same wardrobe panic that I have at home. A few good things that all go together, a couple of scarves and jackets, two pairs of boots. That's it. I never feel like I have nothing to wear (like at home) and I feel perfectly put together wherever I go. Why is that?
It isn't expected here to have a new outfit every day or for each event. No one minds if I wore that sweater yesterday, or even the last three days. So this got me to researching...
The average American woman has 30 outfits. One for every day of the month. About 103 pieces, of which includes 25 pairs of shoes. They also donate or discard 65 pounds of clothing a year. That's a lot of clothes!!! And yet surveys show most American women feel stress opening their closet doors because their clothes are unwearable, too tight, too loose or too new. And these are women in the most casual fashion country of all, where anything goes and clothing should be easy.
One blogger suggested we ask ourselves one question before acquiring a new piece of clothing: would I want to wear this in Paris? Ouch. Out go my comfy weekend pants and that baggy sweatshirt I love. But it does bring up a great point - how many of us really, really love the clothes in our closet? Maybe a few stellar pieces (and fewer items in general) would help us answer yes to that question. In the meantime, I am going to wear this sweater one more day.

It must be tough on the people you share a car with, to have to put up with you wearing the same sweater for 3 or 4 days. F&W

haaa! Indeed! They are quite tolerant and supportive of my wardrobe repetition. That's what makes them special. F&W

Love this post. I have to learn ... less is more... even in clothing! Guess you have adopted the mindset of the Listowelian women! Bring it home with you. Love the format of Lady Claire. She is trying to tell me something. Maybe that I should start to so some painting... I will I will.

I will definitely bring this home with me. It removes a huge lump of daily stress from my mind! And Lady Claire thanks you for listening to your inner queen, who surely wants to play with paint!

Moving last year helped us weed out our closets especially since our mid century Florida ranch has tiny closets, for me it’s been easy as I wear shorts and flip flops 355 days a year now :-) we have also learned to travel lean since we now fly to our vacations instead of drive. I was blown away by the 65 lbs but the more I think about it the more that sounds right.

There is NOTHING like a move to help speed up downsizing! Men have it much easier with wardrobes, I believe. Though some of the younger set seem to feel a bit more pressure to have vast amounts of clothing. And 65! Incredible, right?

Didn't you mean 45?

45? no, 65 was the number I found in my research. :)
