As we followed winding country roads past hillside fairy forts, Damian Stack pointed out this ruined cottage (STOP THE CAR!!!), which had me wondering if the prior occupants had somehow angered the fairies atop the hill. I think I will keep my feet firmly planted outside the circle...
Special thanks to Ger Greaney for all the wisdom, folklore and insight on fairy forts, and for making himself available for a phone consult during our drive through the country. Just another reason while Listowelians are magical!

Wonderful insight into the stories of the ring forts. My friend Ger has great stories about Ring Forts, I must introduce you to him someday. No wine gums today.

Moss! :) Ger is the inspiration behind this post, as you know! I've been reading about the ring forts ever since. Would love to mention him here - but want to spell his last name correctly. Do you have the spelling???

Get Greaney. No rapping on the way from Shannon?

Love your use of negative space here, and that black outline of varying widths around Fabio (a protective fairy ring of sorts??). Do you suppose Fabio flies into the air above a rath, and do you think that air space has a quality and magic of its own, different from setting foot in the interior and different from staying outside the circumference?

Thanks, sweet Dottie! I am sure the airspace above is safe for the avian species, but I'm guessing humans shouldn't attempt it!

Another group of wonderful photos and interesting Irish lore. I especially like early morning light. Fabio has his eye on me, watch out, don't come too close! I don't dare!

Thanks so much, Carol! I was thrilled to learn so much about the forts, and to see how gorgeous the countryside is in the early morning. :)
