The pod is more than just an odd sighting...it is a symbol of the near end of summer and the looming beginning of school. Vacations draw to a close, backpacks appear in stores and school buses begin practice routes before the first day of class. It does not matter how old I get or how grown our children are - I still get a little sad at the end of summer, as if all of our playtime will be on hold for ages.
And that is reason enough to head into the studio and to throw some paint around. Want to join me?

Ah the rituals of the end of summer and preparing for the impending winter. Which in South Florida means fewer parking spaces and waits for a table at our favorite eateries. We solved the end of summer blues 16 or 17 years ago by renting a house on the beach in Cape Cod. Cool mornings, warm sun, lazy days and lobster rolls with friends are a perfect way to cap off the summer season. We have not missed a year. That’s my cure and yes I bring travel watercolors with me.

Oh gosh! You are so right! Traffic begins, snowbirds return and the lazy pace of summer dissipates soon. Cool mornings and lobster rolls sounds like the perfect way to transition....

Jen, I love love love the sweet softnesses in this piece, and the implied scaffolding as seababy tastes thrill and adventure. And that Ballybunion Castle on the cliff—so much human history there.

Dotty! Thank you! It is those oil pastels over the acrylic layers...they soften the top just enough to make it sweet.
