The older I get, the more I realize that success at most things isn't about finding the one trick or secret nobody knows about.

It's consistently doing the boring, mundane things everyone knows about but is too unfocused/undisciplined to do.

I would so love to be a dastardly super-villain femme fatale with mischievous eyes and a wicked, echoing laugh.

Imagine the super-human superpowers (and wardrobe)  such a super-villain would have!

But we each have our own unique superpowers, right?  My superpower is super dull -  I have the ability to do something repeatedly, observe it, refine it, do it again, add more boring tasks to it, repeat them, keep a list in my head of the mound of the mundane, oversee it all and then do it again into infinity.  I remember taking a career aptitude test in high school.  No surprise - the results showed I'd be great working on an assembly line. Yawn.  It doesn't inspire a fabulous mask and costume, just a reliable metal lunchbox full of executive function.

I am actually grateful - this ability is pretty good for keeping life from going off the rails.  But a day of leaping tall buildings, invisibility, flying or even just figuring out who done it in the crime novel we're reading would be nice.

 Just saying.

Yes! That quote is my answer when my students talk about my talent like I was magically gifted it. I tell them nope. I’m a grinder. Success or talent is merely desire coupled with dedication to the work required. That’s all the magic it takes. What you do with your acquired skill is up to you to make unique and worth the time you put into creating.

I love the paintings. Those are some great superheros!

Dear Lola,
I am in awe at your gift of putting together something meaningful in writing every week like clock work and sending it out. I struggle to do this with my blog and I am a damn writing coach! hahaha. You are amazing.
Its ironic that you would say your "superpower is superdull!"
Because you also said today, " I have the ability to do something repeatedly, observe it, refine it, do it again [...]"
To me you have just described the WRITING PROCESS of a successful, prolific writer to a T.
You are a super writer AND a super artist.
Writing feels very conveyor-belty at times. It usually doesn't feel like flirting with matadors or eating marzipan in Paris, as many non-writers thinkg it might feel.
I'd say it's 80 percent conveyor belt, 20 percent matadors and marzipan.
Anyway, you rock.

Thea!!!!!!! Flirting with matadors! Eating marzipan in Paris! omg I love that. But yes, 80/20 for all creative fields, I believe, otherwise we'd be stuffed with marzipan and exhausted from all the flirting. Clearly, WORDS are one of your superpowers!

And thanks for making me feel writerly. I'm tickled pink! xoxo

Oh, but Lola, you leap tall buildings, have invisibility, fly, and even just figure out who done it ALL THE TIME.

Just saying.

Lola, these superheroes are fantastic, and I too dream of how interesting it would be to be one myself--if nothing more than for the wardrobe! Alas, my superpower is not nearly as exciting, or very super, but I can organize the heck out of anything and develop and maintain an organized system for anything. My aptitude test in high school said I'd make a good secretary (really--secretary--not administrative assistant or other such title!). At the time I was quite offended by this, but now I don't mind as much. It makes sense.

Candis! OMG! Thanks for sharing your HS aptitude results - your superpower is the envy of all, I'm guessing. Not only to organize, but to MAINTAIN said organization is wildly wonderful (says the woman whose studio gets organized and then disorganized in a predictable manner). I imagine your superhero cape would have loads of fabulous, organized pockets?
